Customization
Adding custom questions to your funnel
Add steps, send answers down different paths, and keep the flow free of dead ends.
4 min read
A funnel's questions are a flow of steps. Each step is one screen. You choose the steps, their words and where each answer leads.
Where to find it
- Open Funnels in the rail and choose the funnel.
- Go to Set up → Questions.
The editor shows the flow two ways. Switch with View:
- Steps: a list, top to bottom, with each path laid out under the answer that leads to it.
- Canvas: boxes and arrows, for seeing the whole flow at once.
Select a step to change it in the Inspector. Its Preview shows the step as a customer sees it. Undo and Redo are at the top. Save with the save bar at the bottom of the screen.
The kinds of step
Press Add a step, or Add a step here between two steps.
| Step | What it is for |
|---|---|
| Star rating | One to five stars. It can also ask for contact details on the same screen. |
| Long text | A longer typed answer, such as what went wrong |
| Yes / No | Two buttons: Yes and No |
| Contact details | Name, phone and email, so you can follow up. You choose which are required. |
| Branching choice | Pick one; each answer can lead somewhere else |
| Multiple choice | Pick any from a list |
| Dropdown | Pick one from a list |
| Short text | A short typed answer |
| An email address | |
| Coupon | A coupon chosen by the rating they gave |
| Thank-you screen | The last screen, with your review links |
| Welcome screen | The first screen: your name and a line of welcome |
Any step can be required: turn on An answer is required to continue.
Send answers down different paths
- Star rating: add conditions such as a rating that "is at least" 4 or "is at most" 3, each leading to its own step. The standard funnel uses this to send happy and unhappy customers different ways. See How a funnel routes customers by rating.
- Yes / No and Branching choice: each answer can lead to its own step.
- Other steps lead to the next step you choose.
Review links on the last screen
Each Thank-you screen and Coupon step shows your review links in one of three ways: Show links, Behind a button, or No links. Google's review policy does not allow asking only happy customers for reviews, so keep a way to your links on every path.
Problems the editor finds
The editor checks the flow as you work and lists anything that would trip a customer up, for example:
- a step no answer leads to, so nobody reaches it;
- a path that can stop without reaching a thank-you screen;
- a step that points to a step that no longer exists;
- a flow with no rating step, so visits are not saved as ratings.
Select a problem to jump to its step. Problems that would break the page stop you from saving until they are fixed.
More than one flow
A funnel can keep several flows, for example one for a season. Exactly one is active: the one your public page runs. Press New flow to make another, and Set active on the one you want customers to see.
Start from a template
Press Use a template in the Questions section to start from a flow made for your kind of business, such as a café, a dental practice or a garage. You choose what it replaces: the questions, the look, the words, or any of them.
Tips
- Keep it short. Every extra step loses some customers before the end.
- Ask one thing per step.
- Ask for contact details only after a low rating, and say why: "May we contact you to make this right?".
- Try the funnel on your phone after every change. The preview does not save anything; a visit to the real page does.
